Abhyanga can be a lovely form of self-care. This is a self-massage process, anointing the body with warm oils. This practice is very balancing for vata, and nourishing for the skin.
Starting with the feet, rub a generous amount of warm, high-quality, organic oil into the skin. Taking time and care with each part of the body, and emphasizing downward strokes for a grounding intention. Cover the whole body, even massaging into the scalp and ears. When oiled, keep the body warm in a sauna, a warm bathroom, or by wrapping up in towels for about 10-15 minutes, then simply rinse the oil off in the shower, without soap. pat dry with a towel, and let oil left on skin stay there, it will soak in soon enough.
Abhyanga is not always recommended. Consult your local Ayurvedic Health Counselor to find out if abhyanga is right for you.
